In a recent development, Simon Ekpa, an advocate for Biafran rights, has taken action against alleged human rights abuses in Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria. On Wednesday, Ekpa addressed letters to both the European Union and the United States of America, raising serious concerns about the actions of Governor Peter Mbah.
The letter brought attention to an incident that occurred earlier, where three individuals were reportedly killed during protests staged by traders. The traders were expressing their grievances over the state government’s decision to seal their shops as a penalty for not conducting business on Monday.
In the letter, Ekpa urged the EU and the US to impose a visa ban on Governor Peter Mbah, citing what he perceives as the governor’s disregard for the fundamental human rights of the citizens. He also highlighted that the Enugu Government’s actions in confiscating and locking up people’s businesses without due process violate the right to personal property and free enterprise.
“We request that you impose a visa ban on Governor Peter Mbah and add him to the list of terrorists and haters of freedom and democracy in Nigeria,” Ekpa stated firmly in the letter.
Furthermore, Ekpa took to a separate post on Thursday, issuing directives to the traders in the state. He called on them to continue their business operations and swiftly provide information regarding the individuals who were killed or injured during the recent protests. The goal is to facilitate immediate medical assistance to those in need.
“We call on Biafra traders in Enugu to make available, send the details of all injured traders and those that lost their lives during the protest; their loved ones and their families should send contact details for immediate intervention by the government of Biafra,” Ekpa announced.
In addition to medical aid, Ekpa pledged his personal support, expressing his intention to reach out to the families of the deceased individuals to offer condolences and assistance during their time of loss
The situation continues to draw attention from both the international community and Biafrans, with Ekpa further urging his fellow citizens to open their shops, businesses, and provide crucial information about the perpetrators and those involved in the shop closures.
