In an effort to increase the adoption of 5G networks and digital inclusion, MTN Nigeria has teamed with the smartphone finance platforms Intelligra, Stanbic IBTC, and Slot to give Nigerians the option to purchase smartphones and make payments over a 12-month period through instalments.

Any Nigerian can check the financing plan they are eligible for from the comfort of their home using their National Identity Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN). Customers can visit the closest SLOT to pick up their devices once they have been approved for a plan (the monthly payment for the MTN Bundle – Data and Voice).

Through this project, 20,000 smartphones have now been funded since January.

The Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Nigeria, Adia Sowho, stated during the press conference that the purpose of this relationship is to create shared value, with the potential to accomplish all of MTN Nigeria’s objectives alongside partners.

According to Sowho, MTN has partnered with Intelligra to put smartphones in the hands of as many Nigerians as possible. Intelligra, in turn, has partnered with SLOT (Phone Distributor and Seller), as well as other major companies in the banking industry and microfinance banks.

Many Nigerians now use their smartphones as their primary computer. Unfortunately, many people are unable to afford these products due to their exorbitant price tags. Currency fluctuations, shortages of chipsets, and inflation are some of the factors that keep the price of phones rising.

The relationship with MTN and other companies, in Tayo Ogundipe’s opinion, goes beyond simply giving Nigerians access to convenient smartphones and instead aims to promote digital inclusiveness and the adoption of 5G.

“We all believe that digital financial inclusion is a must to leapfrog this continent forward. That is the goal is not just about the phone, is not about data. It’s about coming together to bring our people into the digital world, which in turn opens the door to financial inclusion, which is how we improve the quality of life for our people, and quite frankly, unlock wealth for a big chunk of our people as well.’

Nnamdi Ezeigbo, Chief Executive Officer, of SLOT Systems Limited explains that they are excited about the partnership and ready to deliver with said there are over 75 retail stores, which are strategically located across Nigeria.

“We are a platform for this kind of transaction. So, that’s what we’re bringing to the table, the quality of service. And the fact that we are selling quality products is very proper for this kind of partnership.”
