Globacom Leads Nigeria’s Internet Subscriber Growth in May Globacom emerged as Nigeria’s Internet subscriber growth leader in May, adding about 1.2 million new subscribers—nearly half of the 2.67 million increase recorded nationwide—according to the latest figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Nigeria’s total Internet subscriber base rose from approximately 154.3 million in April to about 157 million in May, reflecting continued growth in demand for mobile Internet services. During the same period, Globacom’s subscriber base increased from about 15.5 million to 16.8 million. The NCC figures placed Airtel Nigeria second in subscriber growth, with an addition of approximately 1.07 million Internet subscribers, taking its total from 54.8 million in April to 55.8 million in May. MTN Nigeria recorded a more modest increase of 382,894 subscribers, raising its Internet subscriber base from about 83.1 million to approximately 83.5 million. T2 Mobile, formerly known as 9mobile, recorded no growth for the second consecutive month, retaining an Internet subscriber base of 802,534 despite its national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria. Industry sources attributed Globacom’s strong performance to its ongoing nationwide network renewal and expansion programme, which commenced last year. The initiative includes the deployment of thousands of new base stations to extend coverage to previously underserved locations and increase network capacity in densely populated areas. As part of the programme, Globacom is also expanding its fibre-optic network and relocating infrastructure in areas affected by major road construction projects. The company has further deployed thousands of 4G LTE sites across strategic cities and communities this year, enhancing connectivity, expanding network reach and improving service quality for customers in both urban and rural areas. The latest subscriber figures underscore the growing demand for Internet connectivity in Nigeria and the increasingly competitive nature of the telecommunications industry. Globacom’s strong performance in May highlights the impact of sustained investment in network infrastructure and the company’s continued focus on delivering reliable, high-quality voice and data services nationwide.
