Following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine on Thursday, nations around the world imposed wide penalties on Russian firms, banks, and politicians.
Due to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, YouTube stated on Saturday that it would prohibit specific Russian channels from selling their videos, among other restrictions.
“We’re taking a number of initiatives in light of the exceptional circumstances in Ukraine,” a Google subsidiary representative said in a statement on Saturday.
“Our teams have begun to pause the ability for some channels to monetise on YouTube, including RT’s YouTube channels globally,” said the spokesperson, referring to the Russian state-funded news organization.
Ads that display when consumers watch YouTube videos are how YouTube channels make money.
Facebook also said on Friday that it would prohibit Russian state media from using its platform to run advertisements and monetize.

In addition to limiting advertising, YouTube said it would limit recommendations to the same channels and would “continue to actively surface authoritative news material” in search results relating to Russia and Ukraine.
