The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in partnership with the International Data Center Authority (IDCA), has launched a strategic national digital infrastructure initiative designed to position Nigeria as one of the world’s leading digital economies.
The landmark collaboration will bring together key stakeholders across the local and international digital ecosystem to drive a large-scale, execution-focused programme aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s digital transformation journey through infrastructure development, regulatory alignment, investment mobilisation, and workforce empowerment.
The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s Sovereign Cloud agenda and seeks to establish an investment-driven framework that integrates digital infrastructure deployment, global regulatory standards, and human capital development into a unified national platform capable of delivering sustainable economic growth and innovation.
A key component of the initiative is the development of the Nigeria Digital Triangle (NDT) — a strategically positioned network of hyperscale, AI-enabled data centre clusters expected to serve as the backbone of Nigeria’s digital economy by supporting global cloud services, enterprise workloads, and large-scale digital investments.
The programme is built around four core pillars: the implementation of a national digital economy masterplan with measurable milestones; the development of interconnected hyperscale digital infrastructure hubs; the establishment of national digital standards aligned with international best practices; and a robust education and workforce development framework designed to ensure long-term sustainability and capacity building.
Speaking on the initiative, Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa described the partnership as a major milestone in Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda.
“This initiative marks a defining moment in Nigeria’s digital evolution and demonstrates the government’s unwavering commitment to advancing the Digital Economy and Data Sovereignty Agenda. Through collaboration with IDCA and members of the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative Technical Working Group, Nigeria is building a strong foundation for sustainable infrastructure growth, innovation, job creation, and global competitiveness,” he said.
Chairman of IDCA, Mehdi Paryavi, noted that Nigeria possesses the economic strength and strategic potential to become a major force in the global digital economy.
“This is far beyond a national project; it is a long-term economic value creation platform. By combining infrastructure, standards, talent development, investments, and effective policy direction, Nigeria is establishing a strong competitive advantage within the global digital ecosystem,” he stated.
Also commenting, Roger Strukhoff said Nigeria is taking a bold and strategic step toward becoming a regional digital powerhouse.
“IDCA is proud to contribute to this historic transformation. The initiative provides a structured and investment-ready roadmap that aligns strategy, execution, and international best practices,” he said.
Global Head of Strategic Services and Head of Europe and Africa at IDCA, Solomon Edun, described the initiative as the culmination of years of collaboration between Nigeria and IDCA.
“This programme is designed to convert vision into measurable outcomes. By prioritising infrastructure deployment, investment attraction, and skills development, we are laying the foundation for a scalable and sustainable digital economy,” he noted.
Barrister Emmanuel Edet emphasised the importance of regulatory standards and governance structures in ensuring the long-term success of the initiative.
“The development of nationally endorsed standards alongside enabling digital infrastructure is essential for ensuring regulatory consistency, data protection, security, and sustainability. This collaboration establishes the technical benchmarks and governance framework required to support effective implementation,” he said.
The initiative is expected to be implemented over a three-year period with clearly defined milestones and coordinated engagement involving government institutions, private sector stakeholders, development partners, and international investors.
The partnership further reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging digital infrastructure as a catalyst for economic diversification, innovation, and global competitiveness.
