Electricity distribution company, Ikeja Electric, has directed its customers to submit valid identification details on or before February 20, 2026, cautioning that failure to comply may affect billing and, ultimately, electricity supply.
In a public notice, the DisCo explained that the directive is in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Tax Act, which took effect on January 1, 2026. Under the new law, every invoice issued in the country, including electricity bills — must carry at least one recognised customer identification number to be considered valid.
To meet the requirement, customers are expected to provide any one of the following: a Tax Identification Number (TIN), a Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number, or a National Identification Number (NIN).
The company stated that electricity bills generated from January 2026 must comply fully with the Act. Any invoice issued without the required identification details, it warned, would be deemed invalid under the law.
Ikeja Electric further noted that customers who fail to update their records by the February 20 deadline may stop receiving electricity bills. Prolonged non-compliance, it added, could result in suspension of service, as the company would be unable to issue legally recognised invoices on such accounts.
The development forms part of a broader federal government drive to strengthen tax compliance and formalise billing systems across sectors. By mandating the inclusion of identification details on invoices, regulators aim to enhance traceability, improve revenue reporting, and promote data harmonisation among relevant agencies.
For electricity consumers, however, the message is clear: updating account information before the deadline is essential to avoid disruptions in billing and power supply.
