The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has called on the Lagos State Government to reconsider its proposed ban on select single-use plastics, scheduled to take effect July 1, 2025, citing a lack of data, stakeholder consultation, and potential economic fallout.
In a statement signed by Director General Segun Ajayi-Kadir, MAN warned that the ban could trigger job losses, revenue decline, and increased hardship, especially among low-income earners and microbusinesses. The association emphasized that the environmental issues blamed on plastics stem from poor waste management, not the materials themselves.
MAN is advocating for a systems-oriented solution, urging the government to focus on improved recycling infrastructure, stakeholder engagement, and evidence-based policymaking, rather than blanket bans.
A recent survey by the association revealed 100% of manufacturers fear job losses if the ban proceeds, and 93% of dealers are confused about the policy due to poor communication from authorities.
