MTN Nigeria’s General Manager for Regulatory Affairs, Ikenna Ikeme, has emphasized the critical role of local content in Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems to deliver accurate and region-specific outcomes across Africa.

Speaking at the recent Network of African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA) Conference in Abuja, Ikeme stressed that while data has the power to transform business efficiency, it also carries risks related to privacy and investment. He warned against over-reliance on external data sources, advocating for homegrown data solutions.

The conference, which brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts, focused on the balance between AI innovation and risk management, data protection, responsible AI use, and facilitating cross-border data flows.

Adewale Adene, Google’s Government Affairs and Public Policy Manager, projected that AI and data governance could add $30 trillion to Africa’s economy by 2030, calling for coordinated efforts to ensure the continent fully benefits from this potential.

Other panelists included representatives from Microsoft, Meta, AstraZeneca, and Mastercard. The gathering highlighted the urgent need for strategic policies, investment in local data infrastructure, and strong legal frameworks to foster responsible AI growth.

The conference concluded with a call for trust, transparency, and collaboration among governments, companies, and regulators, underscoring that local content is key to shaping Africa’s digital future.
