The MTN Foundation has launched a new digital learning platform known as the Skills Academy in a major push to prepare Nigerians for a tech-driven future. This initiative, aimed at bridging the nation’s digital divide, was unveiled in Abuja at a gathering of policymakers, educators, and industry experts.
With millions of young Nigerians out of school and many more facing unemployment, the Skills Academy is set to provide a lifeline — offering free, flexible training in areas like digital marketing, software development, data analysis, and project management. All courses are available online, allowing users to learn at their own pace, from anywhere.
Speaking on behalf of the MTN Foundation’s Chairperson, Dr. Mosun Belo-Olusoga, Director Simon Aranonu highlighted the Academy’s mission to make quality education accessible to all. “We’re creating a level playing field,” he said. “Every child, regardless of background, deserves a shot at a better future through digital knowledge.”
Since going live, the platform has already seen thousands of learners sign up, with hundreds completing courses — signaling a promising start for what the Foundation hopes will become a nationwide movement.
Delivering the keynote address, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, described the platform as a “game-changer” for youth empowerment. He emphasized that with Nigeria having one of the youngest populations globally, giving young people digital tools is key to driving innovation and long-term economic growth.
Odunayo Sanya, Executive Director at the MTN Foundation, noted that the platform was developed in partnership with the global learning platform Coursera. “Our goal is simple — to build a generation of job-ready digital professionals who can compete on any stage, anywhere in the world,” she said.
Open to anyone aged 13 and above, the platform also features a career advisory tool to guide users toward skillsets that match current market needs. Whether you’re in school, out of work, or trying to switch careers, the Skills Academy offers a new path forward.
This project falls under MTN’s broader goal of promoting digital literacy and inclusion through its Digital Skills for Digital Jobs program — a key part of supporting Nigeria’s digital economy ambitions and global education targets.
