The Federal Government has announced the complete closure of the Ijora Bridge in Lagos starting April 27, 2025, to carry out crucial structural repairs aimed at safeguarding commuters and extending the lifespan of the aging infrastructure.
According to Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, the decision follows growing safety concerns due to worn-out bearings—key components that cushion the bridge deck and help absorb stress from constant traffic flow. While the bridge remains structurally sound for now, the increasing vibrations reported in recent months signaled the urgent need for intervention.
“This repair is long overdue,” Kesha said during a site inspection. “We’ll be lifting the entire bridge deck to replace about 50 damaged bearings. It’s a complex operation, but it’s the only way to prevent serious deterioration or potential hazards in the future.”
The bridge, which links the Ijora Causeway to the high-traffic Apapa port corridor, has been undergoing phased rehabilitation over the last few years. This upcoming phase marks the most extensive and final leg of the restoration effort—the first major overhaul since the bridge was constructed.
Authorities have assured Lagosians that a comprehensive traffic management plan will be in place during the shutdown to minimize disruption. Detour routes and alternative corridors are expected to be made available, especially for cargo and commercial traffic heading to the port area.
“We understand the inconvenience this may cause,” Kesha added. “But safety comes first. This project will ensure that Ijora Bridge remains safe and functional for decades to come.”
Motorists are advised to plan ahead, stay informed, and follow official traffic advisories throughout the repair period.
