The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in conjunction with Huawei Technologies, has set up four new Intelligent Transport System sites to monitor, detect, and regulate traffic flows.
Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Commissioner of Transportation, revealed this during a press event on Thursday, noting that the new installations would supplement the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and other Traffic Management Solution devices.
“The checkpoints are designed to detect speeding. One is positioned at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80km/h, and the other is installed at Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a speed limit of 60km/h. These checkpoints are deliberately placed to identify and prohibit overspeeding, which is still one of the top causes of traffic accidents.
“On the other hand, e-police sites for traffic offences have been placed at the Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road. These e-police sites are intended to detect a wide range of traffic offences, such as running red lights, failing to follow lane discipline, making illegal U-turns, and driving in reverse on highways,” Osiyemi explained.
While appealing to motorists for compliance, he added that the fine for running a red light is N20,000 and the fine for exceeding the speed limit is N50,000.
“It is vital to remember that enforcement will begin immediately. Motorists who breach traffic laws as identified by the ITS will receive SMS warnings from the Vehicle Inspection Service department outlining the nature of the infringement and the penalty that must be paid.
“This system is not intended to be punitive, but to encourage careful driving and minimise the number of incidents on our roads. “The goal is simple: to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transportation environment,” he explained.
Olatunbosun Alake, Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, attended the briefing, as did Olawale Musa, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, officials from Huawei Technologies, and senior ministry directors.
