The Nigeria Police Force has debunked a false publication regarding an alleged theft and armed robbery at the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) residence, clarifying details about a significant operation that dismantled a cartel involved in jewellery theft worth billions of Naira in Abuja and surrounding areas.
On April 28, 2024, an armed robbery took place at the residence of a police officer in the Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. During the incident, the officer was nearly smothered, and a secured safe containing jewellery, money, academic certificates, documents, phones, and other valuables belonging to various residents was stolen. CCTV footage captured the suspect at the crime scene, aiding the ongoing forensic investigation.
Investigations traced the stolen items to Wuse Market, where they were allegedly purchased by a man identified as Alhaji Auwal. Despite police warnings to the FCT Gold Dealers Association to avoid buying the stolen gold via their joint WhatsApp platform, Auwal facilitated its purchase and instructed his associates on handling the stolen goods.
Further investigation by the Force Intelligence Department revealed that Alhaji Auwal, his sons, and other associates were part of a cartel dealing in stolen jewellery. This group has been linked to previous similar cases under police investigation within the FCT. A total of 26 suspects have been arrested in connection with the case. They are being detained legally under a court order and will be charged upon conclusion of the investigation, countering recent misleading reports.
The police clarified that the robbery did not occur at the residence of the Inspector General of Police, nor at any official facilities of the Nigeria Police Force. The misleading report, initially published by Sahara Reporters, either stemmed from misinformation by fleeing suspects, those lawfully detained, or out of mischief. The publication erroneously claimed the robbery occurred at the IGP’s residence.
Police emphasized that the IGP’s residence is heavily fortified and secure, making any robbery attempt highly improbable. In the unlikely event such an incident occurred, the focus would be on detaining involved police officers rather than a ring of armed robbers. The area surrounding the IGP’s residence is secure against security breaches and criminal activities.
The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to ensuring justice and upholding the rule of law. All suspects are being treated according to due process.
