Energy, excitement, and unity filled the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja as the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, declared open the 2025 edition of the NASENI Annual Games.
For Mr. Halilu, the Games are more than a contest, they are a reflection of NASENI’s identity. In his opening remarks, he urged staff across all institutes and centres to see the competition as a platform to celebrate teamwork, innovation, and excellence. “This gathering is not just about sports,” he said. “It’s about pushing boundaries together and building one NASENI family, stronger, faster, and more innovative.”
He reminded participants that victory is not defined by medals but by the values that guide their performance, discipline, focus, and unity. “The same values that make great athletes are the ones that drive success at NASENI,” he added with a smile, encouraging every competitor to play with heart and integrity.
The atmosphere was vibrant, chants from supporters, team colours waving proudly, and a collective sense of belonging in the air. “To every participant, give your all. To the supporters, make some noise,” Halilu said. “Let’s show that NASENI not only works hard but plays hard too.”
In his welcome address, Chairman of the NASENI Sports Committee, Engr. Bernard Ozigi, thanked the EVC for his commitment to the welfare and morale of NASENI staff. He said the Games serve as a bridge, connecting departments, centres, and regions through camaraderie and shared values. “This isn’t just about trophies,” he noted. “It’s about fair play, respect, and the bond that keeps the NASENI family strong.”
The opening day delivered thrilling matches in both male and female football categories. NASENI HQ played a goalless draw with PEDI Ilesa, while EMDI Akure cruised past AMTDI Jalingo 3–0. SEDI Minna claimed a 3–0 victory over NEEDI Nnewi, and SOMMEDI triumphed 4–0 against NSEL. In the women’s division, NEDDI Nnewi Angels defeated NASENI HQ Angels 2–0.
Recognition also came for outstanding teams and individuals. Mr. Adabayo John of EMDI Akure received the award for Best Coordinating Subcommittee Member. ELDI Awka was honoured as Best Kitted Team, while EMDI Akure also earned the Best Behaved Team award. NASENI Headquarters claimed the trophy for Best Match Pass.
The Games continue through the week, featuring a mix of indoor and outdoor events, football, volleyball, badminton, chess, scrabble, table tennis, and lawn tennis, bringing together institutes and centres from across the NASENI system. The grand finale is slated for Thursday, October 23, 2025.
