The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has entered into a landmark partnership with global cybersecurity giant, Kaspersky, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s digital defense systems and boosting trust in the nation’s fast-growing digital economy.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on the sidelines of GITEX Nigeria in Lagos, underscores NITDA’s commitment to its Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0), particularly Pillar Five,Strengthening Cybersecurity and Enhancing Digital Trust. It also aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s priority of fortifying national security for peace and prosperity.
Speaking at the signing, NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, CCIE, stressed that cybersecurity resilience begins with people. “Over 95% of cyber breaches are caused by human error. Our first line of defense must be human capacity, raising awareness, building talent, and ensuring digital fluency. This MoU is not about paperwork; it’s about measurable impact,” he stated, urging stakeholders to hold both parties accountable for results.
The agreement covers key areas such as cybersecurity training, capacity building, national awareness campaigns, intelligence sharing, and protection of critical infrastructure. Through the collaboration, Kaspersky will provide technical expertise, data feeds, and advisory input to help shape Nigeria’s cybersecurity frameworks and standards.
Kaspersky Africa’s General Manager, Chris Norton, described the deal as a bold step for Nigeria’s digital future. “Africa doesn’t need charity; it needs skills. We’re doubling down on the Nigerian market to accelerate value creation through public-private partnerships. This is the beginning of much bigger opportunities for Nigeria,” he said, adding that Kaspersky will also join the Nigerian Computer Society as a supporting member.
The partnership builds on earlier engagements at GITEX Africa in Marrakech, Morocco, and follows Kaspersky’s similar agreements with other Nigerian institutions, including SMEDAN.
Both parties agreed that implementation would begin immediately, focusing on proactive measures to counter emerging cyber threats and strengthen Nigeria’s multi-layered cybersecurity landscape.
