In a fierce battle to wrestle power from the the ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC ), The African Democratic Congress ( ADC ) has been adopted by a coalition opposition forces as their platform to challenge the the current president Bola Ahmed Tinubu s second term bid in 2027.
This development comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) stalled the registration of the All Democratic Alliance ( ADA),which was initially intended to be registered as the coalition’s political vehicle.
Interim National Chairman: Senator David Mark, former Senate President, will lead the new patty through a transition period and guide/ oversee the convention expected in 2026.
Interim National Secretary: Rauf Aregbesola, former Osun State Governor, has accepted to play the role after initially rejected the position.
Interim National Publicity Secretary: Bolaji Abdullahi, former Minister of Sports, has been appointed to this position.
The Coalition Background:
The Coalition’s decision t adopt ADC follows the collapse of the initial merger talks with the Social Democratic Party ( SDP ).
Despite adopting ADC, the coalition will continue to pursue the registration of ADA, with leaders hopeful that INEC will act in line with the law.
Potential Bottlenecks:
Potential legal issues may arise from the ADC’s existing executives, elected in December 2022, who insist they won’t step aside or shelve their ambition until their terms expire in December 2026. This position could lead to litigation and adversely impact the coalition plans.
