The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), working alongside enforcement agencies, has successfully prosecuted eight individuals caught dumping waste illegally along Ejigbo Road.
The arrests were made on June 28, 2025, after reports from concerned residents and intelligence gathering revealed repeated cases of illegal dumping in the area. The culprits were charged before the Special Offences Court in Bolade, Oshodi.
Following the trial, four of the offenders were each fined ₦20,000 or given the option to perform community service. The other four, facing more serious charges, were fined ₦75,000 each or given the option of serving time in custody.
LAWMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, praised the outcome of the case, stating that it sends a strong message to those who pollute the environment. “Lagos will no longer tolerate reckless dumping of waste,” he said. “This conviction is proof that environmental abuse will lead to arrest, prosecution, and punishment. We are committed to keeping our city clean, and those who violate the law will be held accountable.”
Dr. Gbadegesin also explained that out of the 11 people initially detained, two minors were released after receiving counselling, while one adult was let go on compassionate grounds. The remaining eight were found guilty based on clear evidence of breaking sanitation laws.
He noted that LAWMA will continue to strengthen both enforcement and public education, particularly in fast-developing neighborhoods where environmental violations are becoming more common. “We’re increasing our monitoring and sensitisation efforts to ensure that residents, especially newcomers, understand their responsibilities,” he added.
He encouraged the public to report violations, work with licensed waste collectors, and avoid engaging informal operators like cart pushers.
