The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), established in 1992 as Nigeria’s foremost intervention agency for science and engineering, continues to fulfill its mandate of fostering a robust infrastructure base to drive homegrown industrialization. Recognizing the pivotal role of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) in unlocking the full potential of human and material resources, NASENI has been instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s technological advancement. However, challenges such as funding constraints and capacity development have occasionally hampered progress.
In September 2023, NASENI welcomed a transformative era with the appointment of Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, an accomplished technopreneur. Halilu’s private-sector experience has ushered in a results-driven approach focused on market-oriented innovations and cutting-edge technology. Upon assuming office, Halilu set an ambitious goal to position NASENI as a key player in Nigeria’s technology revolution, ensuring every Nigerian household benefits from NASENI products.
In just one year, Halilu has revitalized the agency by promoting a shared philosophy of Creation, Collaboration, and Commercialization (3Cs). Under his leadership, NASENI has forged strategic partnerships with local and international organizations, leading to groundbreaking collaborations and the commercialization of numerous innovative products. Today, 36 NASENI products, including solar irrigation pumps, electric vehicles, smart prepaid meters, Android smartphones, and solar streetlights, are available in the market.
During a media briefing commemorating his first year in office, Halilu highlighted plans to enhance NASENI’s accessibility through a dedicated showroom for retail purchases of its products. He emphasized the role of partnerships with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and local content developers in achieving these milestones.
NASENI’s strides extend beyond product innovation. The agency has established a state-of-the-art compressed natural gas (CNG) reverse engineering center in Abuja, aimed at reducing fuel costs and promoting renewable energy in line with global sustainability goals. Halilu has also initiated several administrative reforms, including rebranding NASENI’s identity, introducing a 2023–2027 strategic framework, and improving staff welfare. Investments under his tenure have reached $3.25 billion, supported by initiatives like the accelerated Technology Transfer Framework.
In addition to fostering economic growth, NASENI’s focus remains on job creation, technological diversification, and reducing reliance on imports. Upcoming projects such as the NASENI Renewable Industrial Park, Lekki Free Trade Zone partnerships, and future innovation hubs aim to bolster Nigeria’s position in the global tech and manufacturing sectors.
Halilu’s leadership has repositioned NASENI as a beacon of hope for indigenous technological advancement. By embracing homegrown solutions and driving commercialization, NASENI is contributing significantly to Nigeria’s economic diversification and sustainable development. With an eye on 2025, the agency is poised to scale new heights, ensuring a brighter future for the nation’s technology and industrial landscape.
