At the 11th PROPAK West Africa 2024: Smart Packaging Conference, held at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called on food processing companies to adopt biodegradable and compostable packaging materials to promote environmental sustainability. Represented by Mrs. Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, the governor stressed the importance of eco-friendly practices in driving Nigeria’s economic growth while preserving the environment.
Speaking on the theme, “Unlocking Nigeria Food Security: Implementation of Smart Packaging to Reduce Waste,” Sanwo-Olu emphasized the role of packaging in curbing food waste and securing the nation’s food supply. He noted that the food packaging and processing industries are critical to Nigeria’s economy, supporting sectors like agriculture, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, and fast-moving consumer goods. “These industries are the backbone of our manufacturing sector, and their development is vital to ensuring our national growth and global competitiveness,” he stated.
Sanwo-Olu expressed concern over Nigeria’s food security, highlighting that 40% of food produced in the country is lost before it reaches consumers due to inadequate packaging and storage. He urged stakeholders to embrace smart packaging technologies to reduce waste and enhance food security, emphasizing the need for cross-sector collaboration to address the issue of plastic waste.
During his presentation, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), shed light on the global issue of food loss and waste, noting its devastating impact on food security and the environment. Gbadegesin pointed out that Lagos State has taken proactive steps to address plastic waste, including a recent ban on single-use plastics, and emphasized the importance of promoting sustainable packaging solutions.
Gbadegesin further discussed innovative packaging options such as bioplastics, biodegradable films, and plant-based materials. He stressed that these eco-friendly alternatives not only reduce waste but also align with consumer preferences, as many customers are now inclined to support environmentally responsible brands. “Biodegradable packaging offers a critical solution for businesses looking to minimize their environmental footprint while also enhancing their market appeal,” he said.
Other speakers, including Segun Ajayi, Director-General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), echoed these sentiments. Ajayi highlighted the event as a platform to explore new avenues for ensuring access to nutritious food through smart and sustainable packaging.
