Nigeria’s efforts to enhance its defense infrastructure through indigenous innovation received a significant boost with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and the Ministry of Defense. The partnership aims to establish a Military Industrial Complex (MIC), marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s quest for technological advancement and self-reliance in defense.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, underscored the strategic importance of the MIC as not just an initiative but a national necessity. He emphasized that in today’s rapidly changing global security landscape, Nigeria must develop homegrown solutions to address emerging threats effectively.
“Today, we are embarking on a journey that will redefine Nigeria’s defense landscape and secure our nation’s future,” said Halilu. “This partnership between NASENI and the Ministry of Defense is a testament to our commitment to leveraging Nigeria’s scientific and engineering expertise in the service of national defense.”
NASENI, with its established track record in research, development, and manufacturing, is set to play a key role in the MIC’s development. The complex will focus on the production and maintenance of military equipment, ranging from small arms to advanced defense systems, with the goal of supporting the Nigerian Armed Forces while fostering the growth of local industries. This initiative is expected to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on foreign imports and create a sustainable ecosystem for defense innovation.
“This MoU represents the beginning of a long-term collaboration aimed at strengthening our defense capabilities through innovation and local production,” Halilu continued. “Our goal is to equip our military with the best tools to defend our nation and, through this partnership, lay the foundation for a self-reliant defense industry that will also contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth.”
Halilu expressed his gratitude to Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, Minister of State for Defense, and the Ministry for their unwavering support and confidence in NASENI’s mission. “We are fully committed to realizing the vision of a Nigerian Military Industrial Complex. This is not just about today’s security needs but securing the future for generations to come,” he added.
The MoU marks the start of a strategic collaboration that is expected to elevate Nigeria’s defense capabilities while contributing to broader national security and economic objectives. The ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defense, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, and senior officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
This partnership signals Nigeria’s determination to build a robust, indigenous defense industry that aligns with its long-term vision of national self-sufficiency and security.
