. State PPRO Issues Vigilance Call
An improvised explosive device that was dropped in Ikeja today by an unidentified guy has been successfully detonated, according to the Lagos State Police Command.
At approximately 3:55 p.m. on Wednesday, a man driving a white Toyota automobile was reported to have dropped off the aforementioned explosives.
“At approximately 1600hrs, a police officer reported at EOD-CBRN Base at Ikeja, that while he was on his way to Ikeja, he spotted an unregistered white Corolla car parked on the main road close to the gate of PMF 23 Barracks, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way Ikeja. A young man carefully got out of the car and dropped a bag by the side of the Nigeria Customs Service Federal Operations Unit fence,” according to a statement from the command today. He got back in the car and drove away.
A squad of EOD-CBRN from the base was promptly dispatched to the location to identify the object and render it safe if it turned out to be an IED, the statement continued.
Once there, it was determined to be an IED; as a result, the area was roped off, the IED was deemed safe, and it was then moved to a safe distance before being detonated. The IED remnant that has been gathered for additional examination and research is quiet in the meantime.”
In a brief online statement providing reporters with an update on the event on Wednesday evening, State Police PRO SP Benjamin Hundehin stated that an investigation is underway to identify the perpetrator.
Hundehin urged lagosians to be vigilant as they go about their activities in and around the state.
This incident is coming hours to the planned nationwide protest against perceived bad governance in Nigeria scheduled to take place August 1. Videos of Security operatives in a show of force have circulated social media as authorities continue to call for a peaceful and civil protest by agitators.
