Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has condemned the recent outbreak of violence in Rivers State, which resulted in chaos at several Local Government Council secretariats. The clashes between supporters of two political factions over the tenure of Local Government Council Chairmen led to the tragic deaths of Police Officer Inspector David Mgbada and vigilante member Samuel Nwigwe in Eberi-Omuma, Omuma LGA.
In response to these incidents, the IGP has directed the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, to enhance security measures across the state and initiate thorough investigations into the killings. To assist in capturing those responsible, the IGP has deployed the Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT) to support the Rivers State Command. He warned that the full force of the law would be applied to anyone involved in violent acts against security personnel.
The CP has been instructed to increase patrols, strategically deploy officers, and boost intelligence operations to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of all residents. In a statement, the IGP extended his heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, acknowledging their dedication and sacrifice.
IGP Egbetokun also urged all residents and political stakeholders in the state to practice restraint and seek peaceful resolutions to their conflicts.
