The Citizens Watch Africa (CWA) has expressed appreciation for the efforts of Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), in enhancing the nation’s telecommunications sector during his tenure.
Dave Ogbole, the convener of the group, praised Maida’s introduction of commendable reforms during a media briefing on Tuesday. These reforms have not only bolstered stakeholders’ confidence but have also attracted increased investments into vital telecom infrastructure.
Ogbole, a civil society activist, highlighted a renewed commitment to transparency and accountability within the NCC, signaling positive implications for governance within the commission. He emphasized the improved governance processes within the organization, citing a commitment to providing a fair playing field for all sector participants.
“Citizens Watch Africa acknowledges that the recent efforts at the NCC have effectively revitalized the agency for heightened productivity. This is evident in various stakeholder engagement initiatives aimed at gathering and utilizing feedback to enhance the sector,” Ogbole stated.
“We take this opportunity to commend the NCC leadership for their dedication and commitment to fulfilling their mandate. The recent drive at the NCC has resulted in a consistent increase in active voice and internet subscriptions, alongside a decrease in teledensity,” he continued.
Ogbole highlighted key statistical shifts, noting a marginal rise in active voice subscriptions and internet subscriptions, despite a decrease in teledensity and broadband penetration in September 2023 compared to previous months.
“These indicators reflect the NCC leadership’s renewed commitment to rejuvenate the sector. Citizens Watch Africa applauds the skill and dedication of Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, who swiftly implemented commendable policies to reshape the telecom industry for optimal productivity,” Ogbole added.
He urged Dr. Maida to maintain his exemplary leadership at the commission, emphasizing its importance in fostering sustainable growth within the ICT industry and enhancing its contribution to the nation’s GDP.
