On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, the Federal Government issued a statement via the Ministry of Interior’s official channel, declaring Thursday, April 11, 2024, as an extra public holiday in honor of Eid-El-Fitr. The announcement was made by Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.

The statement said, “The Federal Government has approved Thursday, April 11, 2024, as an additional public holiday to celebrate this year’s Eid-El-Fitr.

“The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, while congratulating the Muslim Ummah for the successful completion of a month of spiritual rejuvenation, reiterates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s firm commitment to providing a safe and prosperous Nigeria for all to thrive.”

Following the Federal Government’s declaration on Sunday, April 7, 2024, of Tuesday and Wednesday as public holidays in anticipation of the conclusion of Ramadan fasting on Monday, a change in plans ensued. The sighting of the crescent moon, pivotal for marking the end of Ramadan and the onset of Shawwal, did not occur on Monday. Consequently, Muslims worldwide were required to observe one additional day of fasting.

Subsequently, Saudi Arabia’s authorities announced that Eid-el-Fitr for the year 2024 would be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.
