The Senate’s Communications Committee has given the nod to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) budget of N549.6 billion for the upcoming year. During a joint session chaired by Senator Ikra Bilbis from Zamfara Central, the committee members unanimously approved the NCC’s 2024 budget proposal through voice votes, following a motion by Senator Tahir Monguno.
Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, presented the performance of the NCC’s 2023 budget, revealing an actual revenue of N448.1 billion against a projected budget of N559.080 billion, with total recurrent expenditure at N67.072 billion and capital expenditure at N3.6 billion.
Lawmakers queried Maida on various important topics, including security, revenue generation, data protection, and discrepancies in the 2023 budget report. Maida assured the committee of measures being implemented to ensure compliance with regulatory directives and collaboration with security agencies to tackle security challenges.
The senators praised the NCC for its timely and transparent report and commended the agency for managing its revenue, capital, and recurrent expenditure prudently in 2023. Senator Ned Nwoko applauded Maida’s credentials and urged him to further enhance the agency’s operations
