As Easter draws near, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) emphasizes the importance of maintaining a clean and sustainable environment through responsible waste management practices.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, highlighted in a statement issued on Friday, urged residents to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal and instead incorporate recycling into their Easter celebrations.
“Easter symbolizes joy and renewal, but it also serves as a reminder of our duty to preserve the environment for future generations. LAWMA implores all residents to prioritize sustainable waste management practices during this festive period. By minimizing waste generation and actively participating in recycling efforts, we can collectively contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment.”
“It is also important to highlight the need for residents to avoid food wastage and use only materials that can be reused, recycled, or repurposed, to minimize environmental impact. The Easter festivities provide an excellent opportunity for individuals and communities to demonstrate their commitment to environmental sustainability”, he stressed.
The head of LAWMA urged residents to utilize the designated waste collection points and recycling facilities spread across Lagos State. He emphasized that the Authority would persist in sensitizing the populace about proper waste management practices both during and after the festivities.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability, LAWMA has launched several initiatives aimed at encouraging recycling and waste reduction. These include community cleanup drives, awareness campaigns, and partnerships with local businesses and organisations. By working together and engaging in recycling practices, we can create a cleaner, healthier environment for all,” he said.
In extending Easter greetings to the residents of Lagos, he emphasized the importance of properly bagging and containerizing their waste to facilitate its swift removal by designated PSP operators. He reassured the public that the Authority would offer additional support to supplement the PSPs’ endeavors, while urging motorists to exercise caution to protect the lives of sanitation workers as they carry out their duties during this festive period.
