In the late hours of Sunday, August 13, 2023, the coup’s orchestrators unveiled their decision via a formal announcement delivered by a representative of the junta on national television. Speaking on behalf of the military administration, Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane revealed that substantial evidence is in the possession of Nigerien authorities, poised to kickstart legal proceedings against the former president and his alleged collaborators. These implicated individuals have connections spanning both within the country and beyond its borders.
Central to these charges are allegations of profound treachery against the nation and deliberate actions to jeopardize the sanctity of Niger’s internal and external security.
“Bazoum and his associates are to be held accountable before both national and international authorities for their alleged involvement in acts of high treason and their actions that jeopardised the security of the nation,” In the televised discourse, Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane declared.
Following the coup’s initiation on July 26, President Bazoum, aged 63, along with his family, has been confined to the official presidential residence situated in Niamey. Growing international apprehensions revolve around the conditions of their detainment.
Addressing these concerns in his declaration, Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane also tackled inquiries about Bazoum’s well-being. He affirmed that the ousted president had received medical care from his personal physician the previous day and no health-related problems were noted.
In the meantime, the military administration criticized the sanctions imposed on Niger by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), denouncing them as “illegal, inhumane, and humiliating.”
Reportedly, the sanctions imposed in reaction to the coup have hindered the public’s ability to obtain crucial necessities such as medicine, sustenance, and electricity.
