The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a warning to Nigerians regarding planned attacks on worship and recreational centers ahead of the upcoming Eid Kabir celebrations. The Nigerian secret police has uncovered Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in joint operations with the Nigerian Army and Police, indicating an imminent threat.
In a statement released on Thursday, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya urged Nigerians to remain vigilant. The statement emphasized the need for increased caution, particularly in light of reports suggesting planned attacks on worship and recreational centers during the festive period. The recovery of primed IEDs among suspected terrorists further substantiates these concerns.
The DSS called upon operators and patrons of public places such as markets and malls to be watchful and promptly report any suspicious movements or individuals to the relevant security agencies. The agency reassured the public that it would continue to collaborate with sister agencies to conduct proactive drills and thwart criminal activities.
During a joint operation, a gang leader known as Kabir Bala was killed in a gun duel in Kogi state. The operation, which involved the DSS, Nigerian Army, and Police, took place in Nasarawa and Kogi states. On June 19, 2023, along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway in Keffi LGA of Nasarawa State, the team apprehended Abubakar Muhammad (aka Abu Direba), a suspected gunrunner. The operation resulted in the seizure of 486 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm caliber ammunition, 22 primed IEDs, N31,500, and a Volkswagen Golf vehicle with registration number RBC202XA.
In another joint operation conducted on June 22, 2023, a team raided the hideout of Kabir Bala (aka Okwo), a notorious gang leader and former jailbreaker, in Ejule, Ofu LGA of Kogi State. During the operation, Okwo and his gang members engaged the troops in a gunfight, resulting in his neutralization. Other gang members managed to escape the area. The recovered items at the scene included one AK47 rifle with three fully loaded magazines, six locally fabricated weapons, two phones, and charms.
