The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called for a collaborative effort to pave the way for a future where innovation transcends gender boundaries and women thrive as pioneers and partners of change. This rallying cry was made by Prof. Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, during the Women & Girls Innovation Summit held in Lagos and organized by Women in Technology in Nigeria (WITIN).
In his address, Prof. Danbatta, represented by his Special Assistant (Legal), Mrs. Afure Iloka, emphasized the need to create spaces where women and girls feel empowered to take risks, learn from failure, and persevere in the face of adversity. He stressed that through collective efforts, Nigeria can cultivate an ecosystem that nurtures and amplifies the innovative ideas of women and girls.
The event celebrated the achievements of incredible women and girls, but Prof. Danbatta reminded everyone that it was not the culmination of their journey towards a brighter future. He urged the audience to commit to fostering an environment where innovation knows no gender boundaries, and young girls aspiring to be innovators are supported with intention.
Acknowledging the existing barriers that hinder women’s access to education, mentorship, funding, and leadership opportunities, the head of the telecom regulator urged the industry to strive for equitable workplaces. He emphasized the importance of supporting and valuing women and girls, providing them with the necessary resources to thrive.
Prof. Danbatta firmly believed that women possess the power to shape industries, address pressing global challenges, and create a better world for all. He stressed the imperative of uniting efforts to ensure that women and girls not only have a seat at the table but also possess an influential voice in shaping the innovative landscape of tomorrow.
“To create a truly innovative Nigeria, we must tap into the vast wellsprings of talent and potential that women and girls possess. Empowering women and girls means empowering entire communities and nations,” he said.
He highlighted the transformative power of ideas and talents, stating that they have the capacity to drive groundbreaking solutions, disrupt industries, and bring about positive change.
Prof. Danbatta called for a concerted effort to break down gender barriers and create an inclusive environment that harnesses the immense talent and potential of women and girls. He expressed his firm belief that by empowering women, Nigeria can unlock a wealth of innovation that will shape a brighter future for the nation and beyond.
