The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has invested more than N500 million in telecom-related research at Nigerian universities.
Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the commission’s Executive Vice Chairman, announced this during a Regional Roundtable with academia, industry, and other stakeholders in Kano. He also stated that the NCC plans to build two centers of excellence to promote research and development in the country.
According to the EVC, the roundtable titled “The Path from Innovative Research to Commercialization of Viable Prototypes” was held to discuss a path forward for the commission’s research outputs.
“The idea is to commercialize the prototypes, about ten of them, so that these prototypes can be deployed to improve telecommunications service delivery, provision of those services, and quality of those services.” “This is why we’ve come,” he explained.
Danbatta also stated that the commission is looking into ways to improve the country’s national innovation system through research and development.
He stated that the commission will continue to fund university research in order to promote development.
Danbatta went on to say that he is confident that the collaboration of academia, industry, and regulators will accelerate innovation, industry growth, and sustainability.
Dannatta asked for the public’s help and prayers to complete the task, which he described as a “signpost of his remarkable contribution to the growth of the engineering profession in the country.”
