The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has embarked on a two-day enforcement operation in the Lekki axis to clean the roadsides of different unlawful activities that are causing environmental damage.
On the Lekki Epe expressway, the exercise involved clearing garbage nuisance and dislodging street commerce from the First Roundabout to the Jakande axis, as well as the Freedom Way entrance.
The operation, according to LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Mr Ibrahim Odumboni, will ensure that the area is free of structures and elements that cause environmental nuisances, such as littering and improper waste disposal, which are currently undermining the Authority’s efforts to maintain sustainable cleanliness.
“Our enforcement team is conducting a two-day campaign, which started on Thursday, January 20, 2022, to stem the tide of littering and environmental defacing, guaranteeing that effective sanitation is maintained within the VI axis of the state,” he stated.
Odumboni noted that certain residents’ street market operations had drawn all kinds of people, including beggars, resulting in a significant level of environmental degradation, including garbage and open defecation.
The LAWMA chief added that the agency had implemented a number of programs and initiatives aimed at ensuring a continuously clean environment across the metropolis, and urged residents to help by avoiding indiscriminate rubbish disposal and other vices.
He also urged residents to adopt the habit of bagging their trash at all times, utilizing correctly covered waste bins for containerization, and patronizing assigned PSP operators, who were tasked with removing tenement waste.
