A special group of lawmakers from the House of Representatives has come together to address a very big problem in Nigeria. This group is called the House of Representatives Special Committee on Crude Oil Theft. They are very worried about how people are stealing the country’s crude oil.
Because of this, the committee has officially asked for the creation of a new, special type of court. This court will have only one main job: to quickly judge and punish people who steal crude oil and destroy the country’s economy. The lawmakers believe that the current system is too slow and weak, and a new court is the best way to solve this major issue.
On Thursday, the committee held a big meeting in Abuja with many important people. These people included lawmakers, security agency leaders, and officials from the Office of the National Security Adviser. They all sat down to look closely at the laws that Nigeria uses to fight oil thieves and pipeline destroyers.

Because these laws are old, the punishments and fines inside them are too small. They do not scare the criminals anymore. Today, oil thieves have become very advanced and use high-tech methods, but the laws have stayed old and weak.
Right now, when security agents catch an oil thief, the case goes to the regular courts. These regular courts are already very busy with many other cases like land fights, stealing, and regular crimes. Because of this, oil theft cases drag on for many years without any final judgment. The lawmakers say these long delays allow criminals to walk free for a long time, which ruins the hard work of the security forces.
The lawmakers explained that oil theft is not just a small crime; it a massive threat to the survival of the entire nation. Even though the government has spent a lot of money on military operations for many years, oil theft has continued cause severe damage to the country in several ways: Nigeria gets most of its money from selling crude oil. When criminals steal this oil, the government loses a massive amount of revenue. This means there is less money to build schools, fix roads, supply electricity, or fund hospitals for everyday citizens.
Because thieves constantly break into pipelines to steal the product, the total amount of oil that Nigeria can produce and sell to the world has dropped significantly .International businesses do not want to put their money in a place where their property will be broken into or destroyed. The continuous stealing of oil and breaking of pipelines discourages big foreign companies from investing in Nigeria’s oil industry. When pipelines are vandalized, it affects the local supply of fuel and gas. This makes it difficult for the country to be self-sufficient when it comes to energy, leading to fuel scarcity and high prices
To stop these problems, the Chairman of the committee, whose name is Alhassan Doguwa, presented the new plan. The committee wants a system where oil crimes are treated as national emergencies.
The court will have specific judges who only hear cases about oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and illegal oil refining. They will not handle any other types of cases. The laws guiding this new court will be written in a way that forces cases to be finished very quickly. Instead of a case lasting for five or ten years, it could be resolved in a matter of weeks or months. The committee wants to rewrite the old military-era laws to introduce very heavy punishments. This includes huge financial fines that will wipe out the profits of the thieves, and long prison sentences without any option of a fine. The goal is to make the punishment so scary that nobody will want to attempt the crime.
