Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, has appealed to Nigerians to embrace the student loan law, emphasizing that it will provide opportunities for underprivileged children to fulfill their dreams of pursuing higher education. The governor made this plea during the 40th anniversary and 26th convocation ceremony of Lagos State University (LASU). He also announced a personal donation of N5 million and an additional N5 million on behalf of the state government to reward the best graduating student, Aminat Yusuf Imoitsemeh, who achieved a remarkable Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0.
“Attaining 40 years of excellence is a remarkable achievement, and I extend my congratulations to the university for its unwavering commitment to maintaining high educational standards, which have produced highly skilled individuals over the years, many of whom are celebrated both at home and abroad. I am equally impressed by the numerous accomplishments of the university,” stated Governor Sanwo-Olu.
The governor commended the management of the university, led by Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, for ensuring uninterrupted academic sessions and actively promoting rigorous research and teaching in alignment with global best practices.
In the meantime, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, expressed his continued support for the institution. Speaking at the convocation, Obasa pledged, “The 40th anniversary of LASU has brought forth numerous testimonies. These achievements are excellent news and further encourage those in government to do more to elevate the institution to an enviable position. As I join the graduates today and celebrate with the awardees, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Yusuf, who has set a record as the best graduating student with a CGPA of 5.0, making history at the institution.”
